According to Adam Schefter, the Patriots Are “Going All In” to Acquire a $90 Million Pro Bowl Superstar Just Ahead of the Trade Deadline — Signaling Their Super Bowl 2027 Championship Ambitions

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — The New England Patriots are facing an opportunity to make a significant move as the NFL trade market heats up ahead of the November 10 deadline.

Amid their ambitions to compete for the Super Bowl 2027 championship, Mike Vrabel's team has been linked to a Pro Bowl defensive star carrying a $90 million contract.

According to Adam Schefter, New England is among the potential destinations for the veteran defensive lineman currently playing for the Washington Commanders, alongside the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and Las Vegas Raiders.

The player in question is Da'Ron Payne, the 29-year-old defensive tackle who was once considered one of the most important cornerstones of Washington's defense.

The reports come as the Patriots are looking to improve their ability to stop the run, a weakness that has placed their defense among the bottom five teams in the NFL according to PFF.

Despite making significant investments in their defensive line, New England still needs another experienced player capable of making a difference in decisive games.

Payne entered the NFL in 2018 after Washington selected him with the 13th overall pick in the first round, quickly establishing himself with his powerful physique and ability to generate pressure.

The peak of his career came during the 2022 season, when he recorded 11.5 sacks, 64 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 20 quarterback hits, earning his first Pro Bowl selection.

That outstanding performance earned Payne a four-year, $90 million contract extension in 2023, including a total of $60 million guaranteed.

Throughout his NFL career, he has accumulated more than 400 tackles and 37 sacks, statistics that reflect his experience and ability to make long-term contributions along the defensive line.

However, Payne's performance has declined compared to his Pro Bowl season, prompting Washington to consider the future of a player entering the final year of his contract.

According to PFF, Payne recorded a 62.1 run-defense grade during the 2026 season, a sign that he can still provide value in the middle of the defensive line.

Washington opened the season with a 1–3 record, making the possibility of the team considering trades involving veteran players a notable topic of discussion.

For the Patriots, such a move could allow Mike Vrabel to add immediate strength without having to wait for young talents to develop.

However, New England will have to consider the trade price, remaining financial obligations, and the possibility of extending Payne's contract after the 2026 season.

An NFL Draft pick could serve as the foundation for hypothetical negotiations, but there has been no confirmation that Washington has established an official asking price.

Competition is also a significant factor, as the 49ers, Bears, and Raiders have all been identified by PFF as teams that could be suitable fits for the defensive star.

If the Patriots truly decide to pursue Payne, it would be a move demonstrating their desire to strengthen their roster depth rather than relying solely on their current personnel.

With the goal of making a deep postseason run and targeting Super Bowl 2027, Mike Vrabel understands that a strong defense could determine the fate of an entire season.

For now, Payne remains with the Washington Commanders, and no trade has been confirmed. But ahead of the trade deadline, the possibility of the Patriots adding a $90 million Pro Bowl star is certainly a scenario worth watching in Foxborough.
