SANTA CLARA The San Francisco 49ers’ first preseason game ended in a 19–13 loss to the Tennessee Titans, but the result quickly became secondary after an injury to a promising young quarterback.
Kurtis Rourke delivered a positive performance before leaving the field, completing 12 of 14 passes for 101 yards and posting a 96.7 passer rating.
He showed strong ability to read the defense, get the ball out quickly and make several quality throws before everything changed late in the first half.
Rourke suffered pain in the rib area after a quarterback run near the goal line, a play that forced him to leave the game and later caused him to have difficulty breathing.
Initial X rays at Levi’s Stadium did not reveal any obvious issue, but the 49ers still decided to send the young quarterback to the hospital for further evaluation as a precautionary measure.
While the team waited for an update, one of the people who showed the most concern was Brock Purdy, San Francisco’s QB1.
Purdy did not play in the preseason game, but he closely followed the condition of his younger teammate as soon as he learned that Rourke had been forced to leave the field.
People around the team said Purdy repeatedly asked about Rourke’s condition while doctors conducted their initial evaluation.
When word emerged that Rourke needed to go to the hospital for additional testing, Purdy’s concern did not end in the locker room.
The 49ers’ starting quarterback reportedly reached out personally to make sure his younger teammate did not have to go through the worrying moment alone.
And when Rourke began feeling more stable at the hospital, Purdy was also one of the first people to check on his condition.
It was a small gesture, but one that carried special meaning for a young player trying to prove himself in the intense competition of training camp.
Rourke later offered an emotional thank you to the teammate who sits above him on the depth chart but still showed the concern of an older brother.
“He was one of the first people to check on me when he found out I had to go to the hospital. He didn’t talk about football or my position on the roster, he just wanted to know if I was okay. Moments like that show you what teammates truly mean within the 49ers.”
The message quickly resonated with 49ers fans, especially considering Rourke had just gone through a situation that left the entire team concerned.
Purdy has experienced significant injuries and pressure during his own career, so his concern for a young quarterback was viewed as understandable.
Rourke is still considered one of the notable players competing for the backup quarterback position in San Francisco.
His performance against the Titans only strengthened that view, as he showed accuracy, composure and mobility before being forced to leave the field.
For the 49ers, the immediate priority remains making sure Rourke is completely healthy before considering a return to practice.
But for the fans, the story after the game was no longer only about the injury or the 19–13 loss.
It became a moment that showed the bond inside San Francisco’s quarterback room, where QB1 Brock Purdy was still willing to stand beside a younger teammate fighting for his own place on the roster.
