Dodgers superstar accused by sister of “abandoning family” after ending financial support following $70 million contract extension - the reason behind his decision earns respect from the entire MLB community

Los Angeles, California — Just months after completing a nearly $70 million, three year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, closer Edwin Díaz suddenly became the center of a public family dispute.

According to a recent viral social media post allegedly written by Díaz’s sister, the 32 year old player was accused of “abandoning his family” after deciding to end the monthly financial support that some family members had relied on for many years.

The tension reportedly began shortly after Díaz signed his major contract with the Dodgers last winter.

While fans and the media praised the deal as a deserved reward for years of outstanding contributions, the accusations painted a picture of a star who suddenly became distant after receiving life changing money.

The initial reaction from some fans was harsh. Many questioned whether sudden wealth had changed the personality of a player who was previously known for being humble and always caring deeply about his family.

However, as more details began to emerge, people close to Díaz offered a completely different perspective, focusing on responsibility, boundaries, and personal growth.

Edwin Díaz did not grow up with financial comfort. Born and raised in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, he witnessed his parents work extremely hard to provide for their family.

From the early years of his career in MLB (when he was with the Seattle Mariners and later the New York Mets), Díaz became known as someone who was extremely generous. He helped his family pay off debts, purchase a home, and regularly provided financial support to multiple relatives.

The turning point reportedly came when the amount of money being requested continued increasing and became difficult to control. Sources close to Díaz said he discovered that much of the financial support was being used for unnecessary spending and risky investments rather than essential needs.

At the same time, years of unconditional support had unintentionally caused some family members to become dependent and lose motivation to pursue stable employment.

“Eddy loves his family deeply. But he realized that continuing to be everyone’s only source of income would not help anyone grow. It was the hardest decision he has ever had to make, setting boundaries so everyone could become stronger and more independent.”

Inside the Dodgers clubhouse, Díaz continues to be highly respected by teammates and coaches for his character. Several veteran players have quietly supported him, believing this is a lesson that many MLB stars eventually have to face.

“This is a story we have seen too many times in this league. People only look at the big contract and think money is unlimited. They do not understand the pressure of having an entire family depend on you as their only way out. Edwin did the right thing.”

On the field, Díaz continues maintaining his performance and remains an important part of the Dodgers bullpen system.

Off the field, he has chosen to remain silent with dignity, refusing to engage in public arguments with his sister in order to prevent the family conflict from escalating further.

The Dodgers organization views the situation as a private matter. However, the incident has sparked a broader discussion throughout the MLB community about the “price of success.”

Many former players and analysts have expressed respect for Díaz’s decision, believing that knowing when to say “no” can sometimes be the deepest form of love and protection for a family.

For Edwin Díaz, the 2026 season is not only an opportunity to continue proving himself on the baseball field, but also a journey of learning how to protect himself and the people he loves in a more sustainable way.

Eric Lauer completely won over the fans when he refused the chants of “MVP” after the 4–2 win over the Royals, instead giving recognition to the Dodgers’ leader
LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Dodgers closed out their series against the Kansas City Royals with a 4–2 victory at Dodger Stadium, completing a much needed sweep after one of the most difficult stretches of their season. Eric Lauer had every reason to be the center of attention that night. The Dodgers left hander threw 112 pitches over 6⅓ innings, the most by a Los Angeles pitcher this season. He allowed just 4 hits and 2 runs, only one of them earned, while recording 6 strikeouts. It was exactly the kind of performance the Dodgers needed after their bullpen had carried a heavy workload in the previous games. But when “MVP” chants began to come Lauer’s way after the victory, the veteran pitcher did not want all of the attention. He smiled, shook his head and redirected the recognition toward a teammate. That player was Mookie Betts. According to Lauer, if one player had to represent the entire three game series against Kansas City, he believed Betts was the one who truly deserved the recognition. That judgment was based on far more than one moment. Betts entered the series surrounded by major questions about his form after a difficult stretch at the plate, but what happened against the Royals looked like the beginning of a resurgence. In the second game, Betts recorded 3 hits, including a home run, a double and a crucial game tying single in the eighth inning. One night later, he went 2 for 3 with a walk, while also hitting a solo home run in the second inning to bring the Dodgers back into a 1–1 tie. It was a home run in two consecutive games for Betts, an especially important sign for Los Angeles as the season entered a decisive stretch. Lauer said: “I appreciate it, but if we’re talking about the MVP of the entire series, look at my captain. He gave us energy, delivered big hits and showed up exactly when the team needed him most. I just did my job tonight. In my opinion, that recognition belongs to him.” Those words quickly became one of the most notable moments after the game. Lauer had just delivered one of his most important starts in a Dodgers uniform, but instead of turning the night into a personal story, he chose to emphasize the contribution of his teammate. Betts has long owned one of the most impressive résumés of his generation, with an MVP award, multiple All Star selections, multiple Gold Gloves, Silver Slugger honors and multiple World Series championships. But his value to the Dodgers goes far beyond a list of awards. When Los Angeles returned home after a 1–5 road trip and having lost eight of nine games, the team needed a strong response. They got exactly that with a sweep. Shohei Ohtani, Hunter Feduccia, Lauer and Landon Knack all made important contributions in the final game. But for Lauer, Betts was the clearest representation of the energy shift that defined the entire series. Eric Lauer may have dominated on the mound in the final game. But by giving the spotlight to Mookie Betts, he turned the 4–2 victory into a bigger story about respect, teamwork and the way the Dodgers found themselves again at exactly the right time.
