With Josh Allen at quarterback and a defense being rebuilt under new coordinator Jim Leonhard, Chubb gives the Bills a proven veteran on the edge, the ability to set the edge against the run, and experience handling crucial late-game situations.
But people familiar with the decision believe football fit was ultimately the most significant factor.
Chubb was described as being attracted by the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl, Buffalo’s defensive system, and the leadership role the Bills were willing to give him from his very first season.
When asked about turning down an offer that could have reached $60 million, Chubb delivered a powerful message.
“Money is always important, but at some point you have to ask yourself what you still want to prove. I didn’t choose Buffalo because of the biggest number. I chose the place where I believe I can win, help the younger players and leave something meaningful behind. If I had to choose again, I would still choose the Bills.”
That statement immediately pushed the story beyond the numbers on the contract. New England may have been able to offer a larger financial package.
But Buffalo offered something Chubb was reportedly looking for more at this stage of his career. An opportunity to compete at the highest level.

For the Bills, having a player with Chubb’s reputation choose Western New York despite the possibility of earning more money elsewhere also sends a powerful message to the rest of the AFC.
