El Segundo, California — The intensity of NFL training camp reached a boiling point as the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers held a joint practice at the Chargers’ The Bolt facility.
According to reports from the practice, tensions escalated during a competitive battle in the trenches when 49ers rookie offensive lineman Carver Willis and Chargers rookie defensive tackle Nick Barrett became involved in a heated confrontation.

Willis, selected by the 49ers in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft out of Washington, and Barrett, the Chargers’ fifth-round selection from South Carolina, are both competing aggressively for a spot on their respective 53-man rosters. During a live-action rep, the two young players made heavy contact. Willis was reportedly seen throwing a punch after Barrett repeatedly struck his helmet with his hands while attempting to fight through the block.
Players from both sides immediately rushed in to intervene. Coaches quickly separated the two players before the situation could escalate further. No serious injuries were reported.
Although fights during joint practices are not ideal, many around the league view them as a natural result of the intense competition between rookies fighting to impress their coaching staffs before the deadline for final 53-man roster cuts approaches.
For Carver Willis, his physicality and aggressive playing style have been among the qualities that made him highly valued by the 49ers. The former Washington player has always been described as someone who plays with high intensity and is not afraid of contact. Meanwhile, Nick Barrett is also fighting to establish himself in the Chargers’ interior defensive line rotation, where competition has been extremely intense.
Sources indicated that the incident came from a series of highly competitive battles on the field rather than any personal conflict. Veteran players from both teams quickly helped calm the situation, while head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Jim Harbaugh ensured practice returned to normal.
Within both the 49ers and Chargers organizations, a competitive mindset has always been encouraged. However, controlling emotions remains essential, especially during joint practices when two teams are preparing for an upcoming preseason matchup.
This altercation once again highlighted how intense the competition for roster spots along the line of scrimmage can be, even before the regular season officially begins. Both Willis and Barrett are expected to continue receiving close evaluations during the remaining practices and the preseason game between the two teams.
For now, the focus has returned to football. But that heated moment served as a clear reminder that the battle for an NFL roster spot is always filled with drama and intensity.
