SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — A years-long investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a young woman has entered a new and highly serious phase, drawing attention from the NFL community and international audiences.
According to reports from authorities in the Dominican Republic, the former defensive lineman who won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs, Mike Pennel Jr., is now being identified as the prime suspect in an ongoing murder investigation.

The case has sent shockwaves after the victim’s remains were discovered on property previously owned by the former NFL player.
Authorities say the remains belong to Carli Franchesca Guzmán Roche, a 22-year-old woman who was reported missing in September 2021. The discovery was made in January 2026 during excavation work at a home the former NFL player owned before selling it in 2025.
Following confirmation of the victim’s identity, the investigation has officially shifted to a homicide probe.
Guzmán Roche’s family says they waited more than four years for answers after her disappearance.
According to investigative documents referenced by local and international media, multiple witnesses provided information to police as early as 2021 suggesting a possible connection between the victim and the former NFL player. Reports also indicate the two knew each other during the player’s frequent visits to the Dominican Republic.
The victim’s grandmother told investigators that her granddaughter had mentioned spending time with an athlete just days before she vanished.
A notable detail is that family members and law enforcement visited the area shortly after the woman went missing. According to statements recorded in the investigative file, they noticed a strong, unusual odor at the scene, but officers reportedly believed it came from a dead animal.
In a statement released through his attorney, Mike Pennel Jr. has strongly denied any involvement and insisted he has no connection to the case.
He stated that he did not know the victim and was not in the Dominican Republic during the time referenced in the investigation.
However, authorities say the evidence-gathering process is ongoing.
The player’s attorney has acknowledged the possibility that his client could be arrested or charged if investigators find sufficient legal grounds. Notably, the attorney stated he will not continue representing the player due to financial disagreements.
As of now, the former Chiefs defensive lineman has not been formally charged or convicted, and no court ruling has been issued.
Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active, and any final conclusions will depend on the results of the legal proceedings in the coming period.
The case continues to attract significant interest from NFL fans and the Chiefs Kingdom, as many important questions remain unanswered.
Further developments are expected in the coming weeks as officials complete additional investigative steps related to this shocking case.
