As the Denver Broncos head into mid-June with a roster that looks largely set, one familiar name continues to surface as a potential late-summer addition who could provide a significant boost to the defense.
The Broncos have already invested heavily in their defense during free agency and the draft.

With defensive coordinator Vance Joseph tasked with overhauling the unit last year, the foundation for improvement has been laid.
However, even with several new faces on the defensive line, there is still room to add experienced players — particularly at the edge rusher position.
A proven late-season weapon.
Last season, Von Miller joined the team in September and made his debut in Week 4. Although he started late, the veteran pass rusher led the Broncos with 8.5 sacks, delivering exactly the type of pressure player the team needed in obvious passing situations.
His contributions came at a critical time, providing a spark for a defense that struggled for much of the season.
Both sides have expressed a desire to reunite as the season approaches. Miller has voiced his wish to return “home” to Denver, while Broncos leadership has publicly stated they would welcome him back.
However, the situation changed after Vance Joseph was named head coach. Mentions of Miller’s potential return from the organization have since stopped, raising questions about scheme fit or priorities under the new defensive leadership.
Von Miller, now in his 16th NFL season, has also been clear about his own wishes. In December, he expressed his desire to participate in training camp with a team rather than joining mid-season.

That stance appears to have created a temporary rift with Denver, a team focused on evaluating its current roster through OTAs and mandatory minicamp before entering full training camp.
The August Reunion Scenario
Despite the current silence, a reunion remains a very real possibility. On the House of Haymaker podcast, a local Denver reporter outlined a plausible timeline:
“I think you have to mention Von Miller, and once Miller realizes he has to do his job on August 25th and calls his agent, and they get a deal done, then it happens. He’s not a guy who’s just going to show up at training camp. He’s earned that… He’ll call his agent on August 25th and if the Broncos are looking for a proven pass rusher, bringing him in at that point makes a lot of sense.”
This approach fits how the Broncos have operated in the past and aligns with their current strategy of entering training camp with a set roster to thoroughly evaluate internal options first.
Scheme Fit and AFC West Implications
Bringing Miller back on a short-term, performance-based deal would give Vance Joseph a veteran, proven pass rusher to deploy in specific situations without hindering the development of younger edge defenders.
At this stage of his career, Miller’s value lies in his ability to create havoc for opposing quarterbacks in targeted packages — exactly the role he performed effectively last season.
For a Broncos defense aiming to climb out of the bottom of the rankings, adding a player capable of 8+ sacks in limited snaps represents high-upside, low-risk insurance.
If the team determines during camp or preseason that it needs additional edge support, Miller’s status as a free agent makes him an ideal target.
As the AFC West prepares for another competitive season, the possibility of Miller returning to Denver only heightens the intrigue.
A defense that was near the bottom of the league last year could look very different with Joseph’s scheme, a strong rookie class, and the potential late arrival of a proven pass-rushing specialist.
For now, the Broncos will evaluate what they have. But by the end of August, if the right opportunity arises, history could repeat itself — with Von Miller once again coming home to Denver.
