NEW YORK The New York Yankees have just added a new arm to their bullpen at a time when the AL East race is entering an increasingly intense stage.
The Bronx club decided to call up a right handed reliever from Triple A to the Major League roster with hopes of adding more pitching depth ahead of closer David Bednar.
This is not simply a routine roster move, because for the 27 year old pitcher being given the opportunity, the moment marks the end of a journey that lasted many years in the Minor Leagues.
That player is Bradley Hanner, who finally has the opportunity to step into the Yankees’ MLB clubhouse and stands on the verge of making the first Major League appearance of his career.

Hanner was called up as New York continues to chase the Tampa Bay Rays in the race for first place in the AL East.
The Yankees believe his ability to generate strikeouts could provide another useful option for important innings before Bednar enters the game.
His performance at Triple A this season is the main reason Hanner earned this opportunity.
The 27 year old reliever owns a 2.10 ERA with 61 strikeouts in more than 51 innings, showing a relatively consistent ability to control games.
Looking at the bigger picture, Hanner has recorded more than 400 strikeouts in his Minor League career, a mark that reflects the long road he had to travel before reaching MLB.
He was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 21st round of the 2019 MLB Draft before continuing his journey through several different developmental systems.
There was no shortcut. There was no status as a top prospect guaranteed an MLB spot from his earliest years. Hanner had to accumulate every inning, every strikeout and every small opportunity before finally receiving the call he had waited nearly seven years for.
Only about 12 hours after being informed that he was joining the Yankees roster, the pitcher sent an emotional message to the New York fan community:
“I’ve waited seven years for this moment, and every difficulty along the journey has only made today mean even more.”

“Wearing the Yankees uniform is about more than just playing baseball. It comes with responsibility, history and pride. I will fight for this city, for my teammates and for the goal of bringing another World Series championship back to New York, to prove that I deserve to wear this uniform.”
That message reflects the journey of a pitcher who was never given much attention but continued moving forward through every level of the Minor Leagues.
The Yankees do not yet know how large a role Hanner will have in the bullpen, but his Triple A performance gives the team a reason to test him during an important stage of the season.
For New York, this is a move to add depth. But for Hanner, it is the reward for seven years of waiting and also the biggest opportunity yet to prove that more than 400 Minor League strikeouts are only the beginning of his MLB story.
