Just 12 hours after signing Drew Allar to the practice squad, the Pittsburgh Steelers shocked their fanbase by cutting versatile wide receiver and former playoff hero, John Rhys Plumlee.
The news came as a major surprise, especially considering Plumlee's significant role in replacing Aaron Rodgers and helping the Steelers secure a playoff spot. His ability to play both quarterback and wide receiver made him a fan favorite and a key player in Pittsburgh’s offense last season.

However, sources close to the team revealed that the decision wasn’t an easy one. Steelers management stated that “roster flexibility” and the development of new talent were the primary reasons for the move. This decision was further reinforced by the signing of Allar, a young quarterback with great potential.
The Steelers front office has faced harsh criticism from the fanbase, with many expressing disbelief at the timing of the move. Some industry insiders speculate that the management is focusing on long-term investments, particularly with the future of the quarterback position in mind.
Despite his success, Plumlee’s contract had been a financial burden for the team. By parting ways with him, the Steelers aim to free up cap space and make room for upcoming roster changes.
Plumlee’s performance in last season's playoffs, where he filled in for Rodgers and led the Steelers through a tough run, earned him admiration across the league. His versatility and leadership were crucial factors in Pittsburgh’s postseason berth.
Nonetheless, the Steelers’ front office appears to be planning for the future, especially with Drew Allar and other rising stars in their quarterback room.
In a statement released early Wednesday morning, the Steelers emphasized their commitment to building a championship-caliber team. "This decision is part of our long-term strategy to strengthen the roster," said a Steelers spokesperson.
As the community grapples with the shocking move, the questions remain: Was this the right decision for Pittsburgh’s future? And what does this mean for Plumlee’s NFL career?
“I gave everything for this team, from sleepless nights to silent sacrifices, believing things would change. But sometimes, decisions beyond your control force you to say goodbye. Yet, I have no regrets. I know I will come back stronger, and make everyone remember my name,” Plumlee shared in an emotional farewell message, marking the end of a challenging journey.
Steelers fans will now await further moves, as the team enters a new era under head coach Mike Tomlin.
