Just 7 Hours After Joining the Royals, Former Dodgers All Star and World Series Champion Shocks MLB by Declaring He Will Never Return to Los Angeles

Posted Aug 14, 2026

LOS ANGELES Just about 7 hours after completing his move to the Kansas City Royals, a former pitcher who spent years with the Dodgers unexpectedly became the center of attention across MLB.

The move, initially viewed as an opportunity for an experienced veteran to rebuild his career after a long battle with injuries, quickly turned into an emotional story.

The reason came from a strong statement in which the pitcher made clear that he no longer sees himself returning to Los Angeles in the future.

That player is Tony Gonsolin, a former Dodgers All Star and a member of the organization’s 2020 World Series championship team.

Gonsolin signed a Major League contract with Kansas City through the end of the 2026 season, including a club option for 2027, before being placed on the 15 day injured list.

For the Royals, the move represents a calculated gamble with significant upside if the 32 year old pitcher can regain the health and form that once made him a dependable starter.

But only hours after joining his new organization, Gonsolin looked back on how the final chapter of his time in Los Angeles came to an end.

He reportedly still carries disappointment because he believes that the years of dedication and loyalty he gave the organization were not returned in the same way once injuries began seriously affecting his career.

Gonsolin was once one of the Dodgers’ most consistent pitchers during the early portion of his career before elbow problems completely changed the direction of his journey.

He underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2023, missed the entire 2024 season and returned for only seven starts in 2025 before being forced out again.

The separation following the 2025 season left Gonsolin feeling as though the organization had left him behind at the exact moment when he needed its trust the most.

“I gave so much to this organization, but when I got injured and could no longer maintain my form, everything changed very quickly. I will never forget the call that day. I understand baseball is a business, but there are emotions you cannot simply leave behind. I will not return to Los Angeles.”

The statement quickly sparked significant debate throughout the Dodgers community because Gonsolin had been an important part of an extended period of success for the organization.

His accomplishments in Los Angeles were also far from insignificant. Gonsolin was a 2020 World Series champion, a 2022 NL All Star and posted a 2.14 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings during the best season of his career.

Even those who disagreed with Gonsolin’s perspective acknowledged that he endured an extremely difficult journey with injuries.

Many fans therefore expressed sympathy, saying they understood the feelings of a player who devoted many of the best years of his career to the Dodgers only to leave when his body no longer allowed him to maintain peak form.

Some fans argued that Gonsolin feeling hurt does not mean he rejects the value of the Dodgers, but instead reflects the emotions of someone who once believed his chapter in Los Angeles would last much longer.

The Royals now become the place where he has an opportunity to rewrite the final part of his career, first by completing his recovery and then attempting to return to the mound.

If healthy, Gonsolin still possesses postseason experience, solid command and a résumé strong enough to become a valuable option in Kansas City’s rotation.

For Dodgers Nation, the separation therefore carries mixed emotions, including regret and disappointment, but also respect for everything he once contributed.

And if Gonsolin truly rediscovers his form in a Royals uniform, the next chapter of his career may not begin with anger toward Los Angeles, but with determination to prove that the career of a former All Star is not over yet.

Amid the Wave of Criticism Despite the 11–5 Victory, the Los Angeles Dodgers Deliver a “Final Ultimatum” to 2x All Star Superstar Kyle Tucker After a Series of Disappointing Performances
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers earned a convincing 11–5 victory over the Colorado Rockies, but the atmosphere surrounding the team was still far from completely peaceful. Because in the middle of the celebration, all attention once again turned toward one of the Dodgers’ most highly expected stars. The player who was once viewed as the perfect piece for a championship roster is now going through the most difficult stretch since arriving in Los Angeles. In the game at Coors Field, he continued to struggle to find his familiar rhythm at the plate. Kyle Tucker finished the game with 0 hits in 5 at bats, continuing a disappointing stretch of performances. Not only has Tucker struggled offensively, but he also made a costly defensive mistake in the seventh inning. On what appeared to be a routine fly ball toward right field, he had enough time to make the play but allowed the ball to bounce off his glove, giving the Rockies an opportunity to advance on the bases. That moment caused the frustration among Dodgers fans to continue growing. Because this was not the first time Tucker had made a mistake recently. Before that, he also had a poor defensive play against the Milwaukee Brewers and received boos from his own home crowd. Tucker’s current form is completely opposite from the expectations after the Dodgers gave him a 4 year, $240 million contract. After the game against the Rockies, the numbers of the 2x All Star continued to fall into concerning territory. He is currently hitting just .230, with a .692 OPS, and is in the middle of an 0 for 24 stretch at the plate. The wave of anger continues to grow. Dodgers fans on social media have heavily criticized Tucker’s performance. Some even called him “the worst signing in Dodgers history.” Amid the storm of criticism, the Los Angeles Dodgers organization delivered a strong message toward their star player. The team has no intention of giving up on Tucker. Manager Dave Roberts made it clear that he remains an important part of the Dodgers’ plans and continues to be viewed as a cornerstone of the lineup. He believes the current struggles are only a difficult stretch and that Tucker has the ability to find his elite form again. Roberts emphasized that although Tucker’s current numbers do not reflect his true value, his power ability is still there. He believes that with just a few timely moments, Tucker can regain his confidence and become the difference maker the Dodgers expected him to be. Along with his offensive ability, the Dodgers still value the qualities that made them invest heavily in him. Those qualities include his playoff experience, defensive ability that was once considered one of his biggest strengths, and his ability to create a difference when he reaches his best form. The Dodgers understand that a player who has been an All Star cannot simply lose his talent after a few difficult weeks. Therefore, the “final ultimatum” for Tucker is not a threat, but a reminder that the moment to prove his value is approaching. Los Angeles still believes in Kyle Tucker. But with the pressure from fans continuing to rise, the 2x All Star understands that he must quickly find himself again before the patience at Dodger Stadium begins to run out.
