NEW YORK Anthony Volpe is going through one of the most difficult stretches of his career, as pressure from Yankees fans continues to increase after he was sent down to Triple A.
The latest controversy emerged during the Scranton Wilkes Barre RailRiders’ 11–3 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, a defeat that placed even more scrutiny on everything Volpe did.
Within the first six pitches of the game, the 25 year old shortstop used two challenges on ball strike calls and lost both of them.
One of those challenges came on a 3–0 count during his first plate appearance, leading many to believe Volpe had used his challenge opportunities far too quickly.
However, what caused the situation to explode across social media was not limited to the two unsuccessful decisions, but also involved his reaction afterward.

Cameras captured Volpe smiling after losing a challenge, a moment that was quickly shared across social media and angered many Yankees fans.
Some fans believed the smile reflected an unprofessional attitude, especially considering that he had just been demoted to Triple A in an effort to rediscover his form.
The criticism became even more intense after the RailRiders eventually lost 11–3, prompting many people to question Volpe’s focus as well as his competitive mentality.
Amid that wave of reaction, Yankees legend Derek Jeter stepped forward to defend the organization’s former first round pick in this scenario.
Jeter, who understands the pressure that comes with wearing a Yankees uniform, believes that one brief moment should not be used to judge a player’s entire attitude.
“New York will test you in ways that very few other places can. Anthony is going through a difficult period, and I think the reaction right now has gone too far. Give him the opportunity to correct things before reaching a conclusion.”
That roughly 50 word message was quickly shared by fans, creating a more measured perspective on a situation that had been pushed to an increasingly tense level.
Jeter also believes that overanalyzing a smile can place more pressure on a young player than is necessary.
From that perspective, Volpe still has to take responsibility for his decisions on the field, but that is different from concluding that he does not care about the team.
Some fans also began agreeing that the pressure of the New York market can turn very small moments into major controversies.
Volpe is currently in his fourth MLB season and was selected by the Yankees in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft with expectations that he would become an important part of the franchise’s future.
During the 2026 season, he has posted a .240 batting average with 41 hits, one home run, 19 RBI, 20 runs and seven stolen bases in 56 games before being sent down to Triple A.
The Yankees’ decision to send him to the Minor League system has been viewed as an opportunity for Volpe to adjust his approach, rebuild his confidence and reduce some of the pressure that comes with the biggest stage.
Jeter emphasized in this scenario that periods of struggle are not unusual for young players, especially in a demanding market like New York.
The Yankees legend’s message therefore did not erase the controversy, but it helped calm some of the outrage and shifted the discussion from one smile toward the more important question of how Volpe can find himself again.
